LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
As a settler on these lands, I would like to acknowledge that we are gathered here today on Treaty 1 territory, traditional land of the Anishinaabe, Ininewak, Anisininew, Dakota, and Dene People, as well as the National homeland of the Red River Métis.
My great grandparents came to these lands from Europe near the beginning of the 20th century in search of opportunities and a better life. It is my hope that they did not realize the detrimental impact settler colonialism has had on the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island.
I am fortunate to live on a beautiful acreage that has allowed me to reconnect with nature and has instilled a passion for climate action. The specific acreage I call home was likely part of Roseau River First Nation lands before being “purchased” by a settler, who then sold it to my great grandfather in the 1950s. It is my goal and personal journey of reconciliation to connect with the peoples whom this land would have been protected by and, if the community sees fit, to move forward in partnership.
I acknowledge that the water that sustains us comes from Shoal Lake in Treaty 3, which caused the people of Shoal Lake 40 First Nation over 100 years of disconnect and hardship. I also acknowledge that the energy that fuels us comes from Treaty 5, at great cost to many surrounding Indigenous communities.
As an educator, it is my goal that we collectively learn from past mistakes and move forward in the true spirit of reconciliation.
